Long Spoons in Heaven and Hell

A child was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said, "Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like."

The Lord led the child to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in.

In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew which smelled delicious and made the child’s mouth water.

The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths.

The child shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering. The Lord said, "You have seen Hell".

They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the child's mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking.

The child said, "I don't understand." "It is simple," said the Lord, "it requires but one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves."

 

کودکی روزی

با خداوند مکالمه‌ای داشت: خداوندا! دوست دارم بدانم بهشت و جهنم چه شکلی هستند؟
خداوند آن کودک را به سمت دو در هدایت کرد و یکی از آنها را باز کرد؛ کودک نگاهی به داخل انداخت. درست در وسط اتاق یک میز گرد بزرگ وجود داشت که روی آن یک ظرف خورش بود؛ و آنقدر بوی خوبی داشت که دهانش آب افتاد.!

افرادی که دور میز نشسته بودند بسیار لاغر مردنی و مریض حال بودند. به نظر قحطی زده می‌آمدند. آنها در دست خود قاشق‌هایی با دسته بسیار بلند داشتند که این دسته‌ها به بالای بازوهایشان وصل شده بود و هر کدام از آنها به راحتی می‌توانستند دست خود را داخل ظرف خورش ببرند تا قاشق خود را پُر کنند. اما از آن جایی که این دسته‌ها از بازوهایشان بلندتر بود، نمی‌توانستند دستشان را برگردانند و قاشق را در دهان خود فرو ببرند…
کودک با دیدن صحنه بدبختی و عذاب آنها غمگین شد. خداوند گفت: تو جهنم را دیدی!
آنها به سمت اتاق بعدی رفتند و خدا در را باز کرد. آنجا هم دقیقا مثل اتاق قبلی بود. یک میز گرد با یک ظرف خورش روی آن، که دهان کودک را آب انداخت!
افراد دور میز، مثل جای قبل همان قاشق‌های دسته بلند را داشتند، ولی به اندازه کافی قوی و تپل بوده، می‌گفتند و می‌خندیدند. کودک گفت: نمی‌فهمم!
خداوند جواب داد: ساده است! فقط احتیاج به یک مهارت دارد! می‌بینی؟ اینها یاد گرفته‌اند که به همدیگر غذا بدهند، در حالی که آدم‌های طمع کار تنها به خودشان فکر می‌کنند
